How to check entry requirements before you book a non-refundable trip

A good travel check separates discovery from verification: identify the likely access route, check passport validity and trip conditions, then confirm the responsible official source close to travel.

1. Start with the passport you will actually use

Dual nationals and travellers with more than one valid travel document can see different rules depending on the passport presented. Start every search with the document you expect to use for the journey.

EntryAtlas passport profiles and Where can I go? are designed for this first discovery step.

2. Check the destination, not just the visa label

Government travel-advice pages typically separate entry requirements from safety, health and local-law information. FCDO foreign travel advice, for example, includes destination entry requirements as part of its country guidance.

Look for passport validity, stay limits, trip purpose, transit rules and any electronic pre-travel permission in addition to the visa category.

3. Re-check close to departure

Entry rules can change after you book. The FCDO travel checklist recommends checking current travel advice as part of trip preparation.

For a non-refundable booking, keep a record of the official page you relied on and check it again before departure.

Quick answers

Common questions.

When should I check entry requirements?

Check before booking, again when applying for any required permission, and again close to departure because rules can change.

Is a passport ranking enough to decide whether I can travel?

No. Rankings are discovery tools. A real trip needs a destination-specific check and the current official rule.
