Travelling with two passports: which document to show and when

Two passports can simplify some journeys, but create document-matching risks. The right passport can differ at check-in, departure control, arrival control and the return flight.

03
Country ruleCitizenship matters

Some citizens must use a national passport.

01

Start with each country of nationality

Some countries require citizens, including dual citizens, to enter and leave on that country's passport. U.S. dual nationals must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Canada normally requires dual Canadian citizens flying to Canada to board with a valid Canadian passport, with a specific Canadian-American exception.

A British dual national can travel to the UK using a valid British or Irish passport, or a certificate of entitlement. British and Irish citizens cannot obtain a UK ETA simply to use another passport.

02

The airline and border ask different questions

At check-in, the carrier needs evidence that you can board and enter the destination. At border control, the officer needs the document required for entry or exit. You may need to show one passport and keep the other available to prove your right to return.

If a visa, ETA or ESTA is linked to one passport number, present that passport to the carrier. A replacement or second passport does not automatically inherit the approval.

03

Keep identity and travel records consistent

Book in the name shown on the passport used for airline check-in. If the passports show different names or details, ask the carrier and authorities what evidence is required before travel.

Do not switch passports to hide a previous stay or avoid an entry limit. A country may also treat you only as its citizen while you are there, limiting the other country's consular help.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

01

Permission on the wrong passport

Electronic approvals are linked to the document details used.

02

Showing only the easier passport

A country can require its own citizens to use its document.

03

Forgetting the journey home

The outbound passport may not prove the right to return.

Quick answers

Common questions

Can I show different passports at check-in and the border?

Sometimes, but the carrier may need both. Ensure the visa or authorisation matches the passport used for that permission.

Can a visa in one passport be used with the other?

Do not assume so. Visa-transfer and old-passport rules differ by authority.

Can I choose whichever passport gives the longest stay?

You must still follow citizenship, entry, exit and stay-record rules. Never switch documents to conceal travel history.
